Bruss Construction, Inc. has completed the second phase of renovations to the historic Colony Hall at The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The 100-year-old building is the social center of Colony life and houses administrative offices, a great room known as Bond Hall, a kitchen, dining hall, and mail facility. Second phase work included renovation and functional improvements to Bond Hall and staff offices, as well as the installation of an elevator, emergency egress, and a fire sprinkler system. Dense-packed cellulose and foam insulation were added to improve energy-efficiency, and old windows were replaced with triple-glazed, heat-mirrored windows. Great care was taken to preserve the historic features of Colony Hall and to ensure that the building facade remained the same. Colony Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The two-stage project was constructed in phases to allow the artists' colony continued use of the building during renovations. During the first phase, the kitchen area was redesigned and rebuilt as a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, with new heating and electrical systems, fire separation features, and a walk-in freezer.
